The actress described herself as a “shy attention-seeker”.

UNFORTUNATELY, WE DON’T hear from Ruth Negga as much as we used to, but in an interview with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show last night, we learned that she’s still as charming as ever.

The 36-year-old actress had a chat with Stephen Colbert ahead of the return of her TV series ‘Preacher’ and the topic of fashion came up. Ruth informed Colbert that she uses fashion as ‘armour’, because she’s a very shy person. The TV presenter admired Ruth’s dress and asked if she always wore such arresting prints.

I try and hide the fact that I’m lacking a personality by wearing dragon-print. I suppose fashion is an armour really, isn’t it, for nerves. I think there’s a lot of shy people involved in fashion, although people seem flamboyant, I think it hides a shyness.

Colbert seemed unable to believe that Ruth Negga is, in any way, shy. When he asked her about it, she said her heart was “going like the clappers”.

Stephen asked Ruth “What is it that drew you to performing if you’re shy?” She responded:

I suppose I’m a shy attention-seeker. I’m a wallflower in real life, but there’s a safe space. Acting creates a very safe space where you can draw attention to yourself, but there’s always “action” and “cut”, so it’s like a safety net of sorts, where you can be an attention seeker in a safe way. Basically, cowardly.

Ruth and Stephen then went on to discuss the next series of ‘Preacher’, and it’s safe to say, it looks really bizarre. She describes the show as a ‘manic journey’, which sounds about right from the preview that was shown during this interview.
